Abstract:
Introduction: Conflicts between medical and nursing staff are a common and increasing phenomenon in healthcare settings, globally. The frequency of conflicts is high in complex environments such as the operating room, which is a critical area of healthcare. The aim of the study was to review conflicts in the operating room and the associated factors. Methodology: A global literature review was conducted in the electronic databases Pub Med and Scopus by the use of key-words such as operating room, workplace, patient safety, team communication, staff training. Results: The literature review shows that conflicts in the operating room are frequent and arise from different interests, opinions and personalities. Operating rooms have unique and complex team dynamics with professionals working in various disciplines. As a result, the environment is prone to conflicts of varying intensity that undermine the quality of in-hospital care. Most studies focus on the intensity of conflict occurrence, its sources and ways of managing conflicts in a clinical setting. Conclusions: The operating room as a unique environment, characterized by demanding conditions, significant time constraints and collaboration with other hospital departments requires both reduction and effective management of conflicts.
