Abstract:

Introduction: In recent years, the use of autologous platelet-derived growth factors (PRP) has emerged as a popular therapeutic option in the treatment of various types of wounds in medicine. Τhe effectiveness of this treatment varies among types of wounds or ulcers, and its clinical application remains controversial due to the often-conflicting findings reported in relevant clinical studies.

Purpose: Tο explore the use of PRP in the treatment of wounds and ulcers.

Methodology: Α systematic literature review was carried out in the scientific database Pub-Μed, using the following keywords: Platelet rich plasma, PRP, Injury, Wound, Ulcer. Primary studies written in English and published between 2019 and 2024 were included.

Results: The literature review identified 12 controlled randomized trials, most of which were in diabetic ulcers, followed by studies in chronic, refractory wounds or ulcers, venous ulcers, and patients undergoing various surgical procedures. In addition, one study focused on patients with coccygeal ulcers and one on patients with coccygeal cysts. Treatment with autologous plasma growth factors is an effective option, either alone or in combination with other therapies, for many types of wounds and ulcers, such as diabetic ulcers, chronic, refractory wounds, venous ulcers, and wounds resulting from various surgical procedures.

Conclusions: Despite the benefits of this treatment, the widespread and effective application of this method in clinical practice requires more relevant primary research.
