Abstract:

Introduction: The measurement of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) aims at the holistic assessment of health of an individual or a population.Aim:Investigation of the HRQoL of healthcare professionals (HPs) who work in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) as well as its possible association with specific individual, demographic and occupational characteristics.Material and method:The research included 70 HP who worked in a NICU of an either public or private hospital of Greece. A questionnaire with individual/demographic/occupational data and the psychometric tool of general application “SF-36” was used. Results:The HPs who are male or childless are associated with better HRQoL as they have significantly higher values ??in most domains of the instrument SF-36 (p=0,007 to 0,035 and p=0,004 to 0,049, respectively). Single participants  perform daily physical activities without restrictions due to health issues (p=0,021). Staff with highest education estimates more often its personal health as very good (p=0,021) while full-time employment is associated with positive emotions (p=0,021). Contractors, do not express problems at work or other tasks (p=0,038) and perform daily activities without restrictions (p=0,042). The HPs with stable shifts consider their personal health as very good (p=0,011) and perform social activities without restrictions (p=0,005). Finally, doctors experience less physical pain in daily life compared to nursing staff (p=0,021) and better general health compared to midwifery staff (p=0,048).Conclusions :The gender and the socio-demographic profile have a significant impact on HRQoL. The design of strategies for prevention of professional fatigue and improvement of HRQL of NICU healthcare professionals will upgrade the quality of  the provided care to the neonates and their families
